High Protein and Low Carbohydrate Diets

High Protein and Low Carbohydrate (or Low Carb) Diets are a phenomenon that have come onto the diet scene since the Atkins Diet first became widely published in the 1990’s. Many people have easily become quick fans of the diet as you can still “eat what you want.” The main premises of the diet is that dieters can still eat all the lean protein (pork, beef, chicken, seafood, eggs) they want, but must cut two things out of their daily diet: sugars and carbohydrates.

The first step of the diet is a two week program that requires dieters to abstain from eating more than 20 carbs a day. So, certain things like vegetables and fruits don’t necessarily have to be cut out of your diet. You can have bacon and eggs for breakfast, a cob salad for lunch, and steak and asparagus for dinner. You can have a snack in the middle of the day like beef jerky, or a ham and cheese roll up.

You can still drink coffee, alcohol, and sugar-free or “diet” sodas and juices. Vegetables do have carbohydrates, but that doesn’t mean you should cut them out of your diet just because you’re doing the low carb thing! They have fewer carbs than other foods like candy bars, French fries, breads, pastas, and other potatoes. Other benefits of low carb diets are that you can still eat out.

It is always easy to find something on a fast-food menu. In-n-Out Burger’s “Protein Style” lettuce wrapped burger, and Wendy’s salads are favorites of mine. You can eat the toppings off of pizza with a side salad if your friends want to go out for pizza. Places like Applebee’s and Chili’s also have low carb options.

Now, they have low carb bread and tortillas, as well as sugar free candy and ice cream. I can personally verify that this diet resulted in a large amount of weight loss for me. I lost over 6 pounds in the first week. It was great, I could eat chicken wings, sausage, pork chops, lamb chops, lettuce wraps, steak, chicken, salmon, and even have the occasional Michelob Ultra (only 2 carbs). However, this diet was very hard to stick to for me, because it was expensive, and I got sick of eating all meat all the time. Pasta, bread, and potatoes are an inexpensive way to keep your tummy full.

However, you CAN have too much of a good thing. Personally, I think it’s ok to eat sugars and carbohydrates in moderation. Recognizing the results I had from using a low carb diet made me realize how truly unhealthy breads and pastas can be, but I think that our bodies need carbohydrates for energy and our overall health. Just make sure to use them in moderation!
